Step-by-step guide to building an outdoor pickleball court with detailed instructions and tips.

Have you decided to build an outdoor pickleball court for your recreation center, school or club but don’t know where to begin in building a pickleball court? If you’ve ever built a tennis court, you’ve already won part of this battle because the techniques for building a pickleball court are practically the same as those used for tennis.

Whether you coach pickleball for a league sport at a recreation center, country club, senior living community or school team, the following guide will help you understand the basics of building a pickleball court.

Step 1: Determine Your Space

Will you be converting a tennis or badminton court to play pickleball? Are you building a multi-court complex? Are you starting a new pickleball court? Whatever your situation, it’s important to keep the standard pickleball court size in mind and then adjust it according to your unique program needs._

For example, if you need to use a tennis court to play pickleball, it can easily be divided into four pickleball courts so that multiple games can be played simultaneously. Or, if you are creating a multi-court pickleball system, the overall construction and dimensions will be similar to a single court. The only difference is that you will be building multiple courts on a larger scale, and will need fences with padding between each pickleball court.

  1. Pickleball court dimensions: 20 by 44 feet, for both singles and doubles
  2. Pickleball net height: 36 inches at the edge, 34 inches in the center
  3. Pickleball playing area: 30 by 60 feet is standard for converting a tennis court, but 34 by 64 feet is better for tournament play or if you have a standalone pickleball court.

Step 2: Choose the court surface material

If you’re building your outdoor pickleball court from scratch, or if you have an existing court that needs a makeover, you’ll need to choose which type of court surface is best for you. Common types of court surface materials for pickleball include the following:

  1. Concrete: This type of outdoor court surface is the best in terms of both durability and price.
  2. Asphalt: This can be a good option if you want to go the more economical route, but it may require additional maintenance.
  3. Snap-together plastic: Snap-together court surfaces can be installed over asphalt or concrete which can be helpful if you don’t want to permanently replace a multi-use court surface.

Step 3: Select the Perimeter Fence

Fencing is important for multi-court pickleball because it keeps the ball in the playing field and provides safety to players as well as spectators. There are many different types of pickleball court fencing, but wire fencing is the most common because they allow players and spectators to see in and out of the court. They also let light in easily. A contractor familiar with building pickleball courts can help you choose and install pickleball fencing. Just make sure it is covered with a rust-resistant material to prevent injury to players.

Pickleball fencing dimensions: 10 feet high fencing is preferred, but 4 feet can work as well provided the top of the fence is padded.

Step 4: Equip your court with lights

Lighting for pickleball courts follows a fairly standard protocol. All pickleball courts should include two 1,500-watt light poles. You’ll need to make sure each pole is 18 to 20 feet high and mounted on center at least 24 inches back from the court.

Step 5: Purchase a Pickleball Net System

After determining your space, surface, and court material, the next logical step is to contact an expert to help you find the right pickleball net system for your event. There are many types of pickleball poles and systems to choose from, and all have different features. However, outdoor pickleball poles are specifically designed to withstand the elements of being outdoors for long periods of time. A complete outdoor pickleball net system includes the following:

  • Two poles
  • A ratchet
  • An outdoor pickleball net
  • Sleeves (may or may not be required).

Step 6: Set up your pickleball court

After you’ve chosen your pickleball surface, fences, lighting, and other materials, it’s time to build it. The following tips can help you with the construction process:

  1. Hire a professional contractor: Installing a pickleball net system can be a simple process if you’re just setting up a net and painting the surface for a court in your yard, but hiring a professional contractor can help ensure that everything is built and set up to code for recreation centers, clubs and school pickleball games.
  2. Place your court in a north-south direction: Outdoor pickleball courts are primarily exposed to environmental elements that can obstruct players’ vision (sun position, shadows cast on the court surface, etc.), so it’s important to place your pickleball court in a north-south direction.
  3. Court lines should be white and 2 inches wide: Marker lines can be drawn using sidewalk chalk, contractor’s blue chalk dust, green tape, orange masking tape or acrylic paint. The standard lines for pickleball courts are:
  • Baselines: These run parallel to the pickleball net at either end of the court.
  • Sidelines: These run perpendicular to the pickleball net on either side of the court.
  • Non-volley lines: These lines should be 7 feet from the net and located between the sidelines on either side of the net, which run parallel to the net.
  • Non-volley zones: These are the areas of the pickleball court that are bounded by the two sidelines, the non-volley line, and the net.
  • Centerlines: Located between the non-volley lines and the baselines on either side of the net.
  • Service courts: Both sides of the centerline are bounded by the non-volley lines, sidelines, and baselines.

*If you are painting the surface of your court or marker lines, allow the paint to dry for 24 hours before installing the net system.
